Courses: About VET
Vocational Education and Training or “VET” is about the education and training of people for work.
The VET sector exists to develop and recognise the competencies, or skills and knowledge of learners in the workplace. The VET sector provides education and training for the thousands of occupations not covered by university training.
The VET sector has traditionally been seen as post-secondary, non-university education that focused on apprenticeships. But changes over the past decade have seen VET programs offered in secondary schools, private Registered Training Organisations, TAFE Colleges and stronger links developed with universities. There are private Registered Training Organisations, like Royal Life Saving – WA that provide nationally recognised qualifications.
Registered Training Organisations are registered and regularly audited to ensure service quality. The VET system enables Registered Training Organisations to operate anywhere within Australia, and to issue nationally-recognised qualifications that are mutually recognised by TAFE Colleges and other Registered Training Organisations throughout Australia.
The VET system in Australia is an industry-led system. This system has been created to ensure that the training provided by Registered Training Organisations meets the needs and expectations of employers. The VET system has created industry specific Training Packages. These Training Packages specify the competencies, or knowledge, skills and abilities that must result from the provision of training. The Training Packages also stipulate the relevant industry requirements for assessment, and the qualifications that result from competence being achieved.
