Multiplex Classic Paddle

The 2007 Multiplex Classic Paddle was held on Sunday 21st October. The event which has been run for more than a decade, was once again a big success.

The race starts at the Narrows Bridge and proceeds 12km downstream to The Left Bank Bar and Café in Fremantle adjacent to the Stirling Bridge.

This event has grown over a number of years with the support of event sponsors Multiplex, LandCorp’s Champion Lakes Development, Channel 7, Spirit Paddle Sports, Gage Roads and Waterboys.

Ramon Anderson and Lee Davey were the first across the line for the morning in a double kayak followed by Stuart Reside and Mark Finucane in a Double Ski to win their respective categories. Michael Ballen and Reece Baker were both across the line in Single Skis in a time of 0:58:31, however Michael was the first of the two craft over the line. Natasha Leaversuch was the first of the women across the line in a single ski with a greater distance between her and second placed Rachel Simper.

In the 4km Champion Lakes Paddle starting from Point Walter, Andrew Mosel completed the course in a time of 0:27:43 on a Malibu Board. Albert Thomas and Seb Eglington paired up in a double to take out the double category in the Junior Classic.

Event Safety

The lead up to the summer has been a great time for the Event Safety program, undergoing several large changes and the purchase of a new Ambulance.

A relationship was built with the town of Morawa to purchase an ex-ambulance for use at outdoor events. The partnership sees the Morawa St John Ambulance branch selling their second hand ambulance to RLSS, who in return are providing free training courses for students and the general Morawa public to become trained and qualified in a number of life saving disciplines.

“As a small community we know how important every resource is and its terrific that we can support a worthy community group like Royal Life Saving in this way.” Shire President Jim Cook said the partnership was a fantastic opportunity to build capacity in the Morawa community.

The President of RLSSWA Ross Peters said the ambulance could be used in the Society’s Event Safety Programme. ‘’This partnership between RLSSWA and the Shire Of Morawa will benefit the Western Australian community by providing additional capacity to the Society’s Event Safety Programme,” he said.

“We at the Society are both grateful and excited by the Shires initiative and spirit of generosity.’’

With this and several other new developments you will now see Event Safety staff at larger events such as Justin Timberlake, Linkin Park, Red Bull Air Race and many more!

Extreme Sports Research

At the Active 07 Conference entitled On Common Ground Lauren Nimmo and James Stewart from the Community Health department presented the research conducted by the Royal Life Saving Society WA (RLSSWA) into Extreme Sports participation. The conference, organised by the Department of Sport and Recreation, for the sport and recreation industry took place on the 18th and 19th of November 2007 with representatives from all associated fields.

RLSSWA presented research commissioned by the Department of Sport and Recreation that involved investigating the current level and scope of participation in Extreme Sports within W.A. The study covered the phenomenal increase in numbers of participants, in particular the motivations for why some people choose these alternatives over those considered to be mainstream sports. The research presented looked into findings into the possibility of extreme sports such as Freestyle BMX or Freerunning becoming mainstream sports, similar to the introduction of Snowboarding into the Winter Olympics, and the feelings of participants towards institutionalisation.

This study is the first of its kind into the field of extreme and challenge sport within Western Australia, involving RLSSWA staff conducting focus groups with athletes that participate in alternative sports. Over the course of two months members of the research team, including Julia McNamara and Peter Leaversuch, spoke to representatives from Parkour (Freerunning), Freestyle BMX, FMX, Downhill Mountain Bike Riding, Trial Bike Riding, Motor Trials, Skateboarding, BASE jumping, Long Distance Triathlon and Ultra Marathon running.

Royal Life Saving Society WA thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to investigate this new field, and is looking forward to great opportunities in the future.

Swim School Open Days

The 2007 RLSS Swim School Open Day successfully went ahead on Sunday 7th October from 11-2pm at Endorsed Swim Schools throughout the state. There was 16 Endorsed Swim School’s part of the Open Day this year which is a great response up from 11 centres last year. A key success was the great representation of metropolitan and regional centres involved ensuring maximum access from the WA community.

Promotion and public awareness of the Open Days was supported by an intensive lead up advertising/marketing campaign. In addition to the direct exposure of the Swim Schools at the days the marketing campaign involved the following initiatives;

• Radio advertising paid spots, CSA spots, venue crosses, pointer spots, hot date segments, breakfast segments.
• Print advertising  advertisements in local community newspapers.
• Flyers   1500 flyers supplied to all venues to distribute via local schools, community groups and venue patrons.
• Signage   corflute ‘free assessment’ and sponsor signage to all venues.
• Website  articles and web banners on the Swim & Survive and RLSS websites.

In addition the following resources & giveaways were supplied to each venue providing added value to the participant;

• Drink bottles  supplied as spot prizes
• Swim caps  supplied to each participant
• Sweatbands  supplied as spot prizes

Attendance and participation at the Open Days was very positive for the 2nd year of the promotion. Whilst a key component of the Open Days was the free Swim & Survive Assessment, RLSS encouraged venues to offer as many other activities as suitable to create a complete ‘family fun day’. This inturn lead to increased community wide participation attracting a range of demographics.

RLSS would like to thank Sunsmart & Western Power for their support and the Swim Schools involved for making the day happen. Check out the RLSS website for photos of the day that will be posted live soon!
